So ya wanna be on TV, huh?

Think ya got what it takes to star in your own show? Step right up! It’s a new year and we’re always on the lookout for new talent to join our team.

Now in the food TV business, there’s two ways to create a show.

First way is to find a potential host/star who has expertise in a particular culinary discipline (vegan, BBQ, French, etc.) and build the show around them.

The other way is to come up with a show idea and find someone who would shine doing that gig. We’ve had success both ways and the trick when you’re casting is to look at everyone with an open mind.

As God is my bagel, you never know where the next wonderful talent is going to come from.

Making a TV show is equal parts terrifying and exhilarating. This is particularly true in our end of the sandbox because our hosts mostly have food and cooking backgrounds but aren’t professional actors trained to memorize scripts and hit their marks.

So, do you have the Royal Jelly, the right stuff?

Here’s what doesn’t matter when we’re evaluating a potential new host: age, gender, skin color or professional certification. That’s right, it’s not important whether you’ve been to chef school as long as you can cook and know your way around a kitchen.

As for the other stuff, Gusto is joyously multicultural, and we have hosts of all shapes and sizes from pretty much every corner of the world. Here’s what is important: we look for people who are authentic and confident. By authentic we mean genuine and not a “type” (how often did your mom tell you to just be yourself?!). By confident we mean the ability to get your brain, mouth, heart, and hands all working at the same time.

Sound simple? It’s not.

Television is a tough media, and you must have something special to make emotional connections with complete strangers. Who knows, this could be the beginning of an amazing adventure…
