Liam Lewis on Generation Cooks: A Culinary Journey to Inspire Gen Zs

Liam Lewis is one of the hosts of Generation Cooks, a new series celebrating the creativity and energy of culinary talent across all ages. We caught up with Liam to hear about his journey from a food-loving kid to a television personality, his mission to inspire the next generation of chefs, and what viewers can look forward to on the show.

When did you realize you wanted to be a chef?

Liam Lewis: I didn’t have a single “aha” moment—I think I just was a chef from a young age. I started a food blog with my mom when I was 10, and from there, my passion for cooking grew into something serious. I loved exploring farmers’ markets, discovering new ingredients, and experimenting in the kitchen. By 12 or 14, I was already cooking at dinner parties and pop-ups in Vancouver.

What did your blog entail?

LL: It started as a website blog and Twitter (now X). I’d tweet my thoughts while exploring farmers’ markets and dining out, then go home and write full reviews. When Instagram came along, I shifted more to visuals but kept writing. My blog helped me build a connection with others who loved food as much as I did, and it was the start of my public food journey.

Who or what inspires your approach to cooking?

LL: It’s more about the “what” than the “who.” I’m driven by curiosity and the challenge to learn something new. Growing up in different places exposed me to diverse cultures, especially Japanese cooking. I’m inspired by seasonal, local ingredients and blending them into creative, flavorful dishes. Anthony Bourdain had a huge impact on me with his authentic approach to food and travel.

What inspired you to pursue a career in television?

LL: My first TV segment was at 10 years old in a small Alberta town. They thought my blog was ‘cute,’ so they filmed me at my favorite sushi restaurant. The chef even named a roll after me—the “Liam Roll,” which is still on their menu! Later, I did the morning show circuit in Vancouver as my social media presence grew. The thrill of multitasking on set, like in a kitchen, hooked me!

Can you share a memorable moment while shooting at Gusto Studios?

LL: My mom, who’s been with me through my cooking journey, surprised me by appearing on set. She’s usually camera-shy but having her in an episode was very meaningful. It’s a moment I’ll cherish forever.

What do you consider the most rewarding aspect of your career?

LL: Seeing others I’ve influenced discover a love for cooking. Whether it’s friends recreating recipes I taught them or viewers trying my dishes, knowing I’ve inspired someone to get in the kitchen is incredibly fulfilling.

What message do you hope to share with younger generations through cooking?

LL: Don’t be afraid to start. There’s no wrong answer in the kitchen when you’re learning. Be curious, experiment with ingredients, and enjoy the process. Cooking is for everyone!

Can you share a favorite recipe from the show?

LL: Okonomiyaki, a savory Japanese pancake, is one of my favorites. The name means “as you wish” in Japanese, so it’s versatile. On the show, I used bacon, but you can add mushrooms, zucchini, or any topping you like. It’s simple, delicious, and really showcases how cooking can be fun and flexible!

If you could host a dinner party with any three people, who would they be?

LL: Lewis Hamilton (my favorite Formula One driver) Tyler The Creator (one of my favorite artists), and my mom. We’d have braised beef short ribs, a fresh salad, and spend the night talking, laughing, and snacking in the kitchen.

Any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about?

LL: I’m super excited about a new series I’m working on that’s all about getting Gen Zs into the kitchen. The plan is to cook with them in their own spaces, teach them new skills, and make cooking feel approachable and fun. It’s going to be a blast—stay tuned for more!
