GOBBLE GOBBLE – THREE THINGS YOU NEED FOR THANKSGIVING
Chris Knight | October 2, 2025
Being in the TV Biz, I’ve spent most of my grown-up years going back and forth between Canada & the US and the differences between the two can be demonstrated through how each country celebrates Thanksgiving. Yes, other countries have fall harvest celebrations (notably China, South Korea, Japan & Germany) but we’re the only ones who call it THANKSGIVING. While Americans celebrate by deep-frying entire birds and battling strangers for flat-screen TVs on Black Friday, Canadians do it earlier, quieter, and with fewer casseroles involving marshmallows. Canadian Thanksgiving falls in October—because harvest happens sooner when your country is mostly covered in snow six months a year.
Whereas American Thanksgiving is a cinematic, emotional epic complete with parades, football, and political debates at the dinner table, Canada’s version is a polite, low-key homage to gratitude, gravy, and fall foliage. Think fewer pilgrims, more pumpkin pie.
The U.S. ties its feast to 1621 Plymouth mythology. Canada? A mishmash of explorers, harvest festivals, and, for good measure, Queen Victoria. Canadian Bragging Rights: The first recorded Thanksgiving in Canada was held by English explorer Martin Frobisher in 1578, 43 years before the Pilgrims’ feast in 1621.
Both nations agree on turkey, stuffing, and arguing over who overcooked what. But only one of them does it with snow tires already on. 🍁🦃
But enough jingoism, here are 3 things you absolutely have to have for the best Thanksgiving ever:
