Short Grain Rice

All recipes featured in this episode of Bring on the Karbs! were improvised by Josh and Erica Karbelnik. Please note that the following recipes are approximations of what unfolded during the episode.

We encourage you to embrace the spirit of experimentation when recreating these dishes and share your results with us. Individual results may vary.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup short grain rice
  • 1 cup plus 2 tbsp (280 ml) water

For the Furikake:

  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp toasted black sesame seeds
  • 2 tsp nori, ground in a spice grinder or mortar and pestle

Method:

Wash the rice: in a bowl, add rice and water and rinse by swiping the rice with your hands. Drain and discard water, add fresh water, and repeat 3 times.

Add rice to a pot and add 1 cup plus 2 tbsp water. Cover with a lid, turn on the heat to medium high, and cook for 3 1/2 to 4 minutes.

Turn the heat down to low and simmer the rice for 15-17 minutes.

Meanwhile, stir together the furikake ingredients.

Turn off the heat and let the rice sit covered for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve sprinkled with furikake.
