From Disney to Double Burgers: Chef Joe Friday Brings Flavor to Gusto TV
Known for his deep respect for culinary craft and his down-to-earth teaching style, Chef Joe Friday brings soul, skill, and storytelling to every dish. From training at Walt Disney World’s prestigious culinary academy to exploring global burger culture on Cheeseburgers of the World for Gusto TV, Joe has carved out a career that blends tradition, creativity and passion.
What first drew you to food television? Joe Friday: I didn’t really pursue food TV directly—it was more of an opportunity I stepped into. What pulled me in was the chance to share what I love, teach people, and just be myself. I enjoy telling food stories and connecting with others through cooking.
What’s one moment from filming at Gusto Studios that stands out? JF: Wrapping up Season 2. The first season, I was still figuring things out. But by Season 2, I was comfortable, I knew the crew, and we really bonded. There was a lot of laughter behind the scenes, and when we wrapped, we took photos, shared memories, and I got a plaque. It just felt like a real celebration of the work we’d done together.
Let’s talk food—what’s your all-time favorite dish to make? JF: That’s a tough one. I’d say chicken pot pie. It’s a southern classic and I love the savory pastry. But burgers? Burgers are always on my list. They’re fun, creative, and always a crowd-pleaser.
Do you have a go-to burger recipe? JF: Definitely. The Double Friday Burger. It’s simple but done right—good beef, potato bun, melted American cheese, grilled onions, and mustard. No gimmicks, just solid ingredients and technique.
You’ve created a lot of different burgers—what’s behind that passion? JF: Research and a love for food history. I’ve driven across the U.S. visiting iconic burger spots—like Texas Tavern in Virginia, Leo’s Lunch in Connecticut, and Apple Pan in California. Every region has its own burger culture, shaped by what’s available. It’s fascinating!
You mentioned Japan as one of your favorite places to work—why is that? JF: The work ethic. The precision. The pride in doing things right. In Japan, there’s a saying—if you’re a rice farmer, aim to make the perfect grain every day. That mindset sticks with me. Whether you’re flipping burgers or making sushi, give it your best every time.
What’s one kitchen tool you can’t live without? JF: My chef’s knife. It’s essential—whether I’m breaking down meat, chopping onions, or prepping vegetables. A sharp knife is the foundation.
What’s one kitchen tool you can’t live without? JF: My chef’s knife. It’s essential—whether I’m breaking down meat, chopping onions, or prepping vegetables. A sharp knife is the foundation.
You trained at Walt Disney World’s culinary academy—what was that experience like? JF: Incredible. We learned from world-renowned chefs, had access to amazing resources, and I even got to cook at places like Epcot and the Contemporary Resort. It was immersive, hands-on, and completely shaped who I am as a chef.
What’s been the most rewarding part of your career so far? JF: Seeing people smile after they eat something I’ve made. That’s been the same since day one. Food creates connection—whether I’m at the table or just in the kitchen, I get to be part of that experience.
Any exciting projects coming up? JF: I’m putting more energy into my YouTube channel. It’s become a space for me to be completely myself and share more recipes, stories, and what I love.
Are you still involved in the restaurant world? JF: Absolutely. I’m still all-in on burgers and private chef work. I have two locations of Friday Burger Company, and my fine dining background comes in handy with private dinners. It’s the best of both worlds.
Here’s How to Host a Stress-Free Mother’s Day Brunch
Skip the hassle of finding a reservation this year. There’s no better way to say thank you than with a delicious homemade brunch — and Gusto TV is here to help you celebrate Mom with love, flavour, and a little extra flair. Whether you’re planning a cozy meal for two or a full spread for the whole family, we’ve curated a foolproof menu featuring our standout recipes.
Here’s everything you need to host the ultimate Mother’s Day brunch at home:
Keep things fresh with this Springtime Frittata — a one-pan wonder that’s easy to prep ahead. Packed with tender asparagus, arugula, and plenty of herbs, it’s great for brunch and light enough to leave room for dessert.
Ditch the boxed mix and elevate your flapjack game with our Buttermilk Pancakes. Light, fluffy, and just sweet enough, they’ll look (and taste) like something you’d order at a café. Top with maple syrup, fresh berries and edible flowers for an extra-special touch.
No brunch is complete without something warm from the oven. Try our Classic Scones served warm with jam, butter, or clotted cream. These golden, flaky beauties come together in under 30 minutes and fill the kitchen with that cozy, bakery smell.
Sip in Style: Build-Your-Own Mimosa Bar
Set up a simple mimosa bar with a bottle of bubbly, a few juice options (orange, grapefruit, mango), and a bowl of fresh fruit for garnish. For a zero-proof option, try our refreshing Rosemary Pomegranate Fizz or Lavender Peach Lemonade.
Finishing Touches
Create a restaurant-worthy vibe with fresh flowers, linen napkins, and a hand-written card. And if you’re looking for an entertaining (and visually appealing) backdrop while you cook or dine, stream a female-led Gusto show like Let’s Brunch, Flour Power, or Feed My Soul…V!
Celebrate the moms, aunties, grandmas, and caregivers in your life with a brunch that’s as thoughtful as it is delicious.
Known for her passion for empowering women and her fresh take on beauty, Najla Sater has built a personal brand rooted in self-care, authenticity, and resilience. She shines on Gusto TV’s Inside & Out, where she shares her real-world experience as a mother, makeup artist, and advocate for wellness. We caught up with Najla to chat about her beauty philosophy and why taking care of yourself is anything but selfish.
You’re a big believer that beauty has no rules. What does that mean to you personally?
Najla Sater: Beauty, to me, is about feeling your best—whatever that looks like for you. It’s not tied to makeup or appearances at all. It’s emotional, mental, even spiritual. Everyone expresses it differently, and that’s what makes it powerful.
Inside & Out has been a success! Are there any standout moments you’re especially proud of?
NS: Honestly, just the opportunity itself. Hosting a show was always a dream of mine. One moment that stood out was doing a hand scrub demo with a crew member—it turned into such a genuine, funny interaction that captured the real, unscripted energy I love most.
What excites you most about bringing conversations around beauty and self-care to a wider audience?
NS: I love that we’re creating space for real, relatable stories. Women are juggling so much, and sometimes they just need a reminder to prioritize themselves. If even one person feels seen or encouraged, that’s everything.
Why do you think a show like Inside & Out is so important right now?
NS: Life is fast and overwhelming. Inside & Out offers something grounding—a way to reconnect with yourself through small but powerful acts of self-care, mindfulness, and real conversation. It’s the kind of reminder we all need sometimes.
Clean beauty is a big focus for you. Why is that important, and how do you define it personally?
NS: Clean beauty is about mindfulness. Becoming a mom made me much more conscious about what I use—not just for me, but for the example I’m setting for my daughters. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about making better choices when you can and paying attention to what’s going on your skin.
How has your relationship with beauty and self-care evolved over the years?
NS: It’s changed dramatically. As a teenager, beauty gave me confidence when I struggled with acne. Later, becoming a mom shifted everything—I lost myself for a while, pouring all my energy into my family. But reclaiming self-care reminded me that showing up for myself isn’t selfish, it’s essential. Now, it’s a part of who I am.
What advice would you give women who are struggling with confidence or self-image?
NS: You deserve to feel good. Confidence isn’t about changing who you are—it’s about giving yourself the same love and care you give others. When you feel good, you do good, and everyone around you benefits too.
What do you consider the most rewarding aspect of your career so far?
NS: Using my own struggles as a survival guide for other women. Turning hard moments into lessons that inspire growth, confidence, and hope—that’s the real reward.
Any exciting projects coming up?
NS: I’m planning to launch a podcast that will give women a platform to share their stories—turning trials into triumphs. Vulnerability is powerful, and I want to create a space where women can inspire each other by being real.
Najla’s journey is a testament to the strength that comes from showing up for yourself, inside and out—and the ripple effect it creates when you do.

Each year, Earth Day reminds us that small daily actions—like what we put on our plate—can have a meaningful impact on our planet.
Food production accounts for nearly a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, with animal agriculture contributing significantly to deforestation, water consumption, and methane pollution.
The good news? Making more sustainable food choices is one of the most impactful (and delicious) ways we can help the planet—starting right in our own kitchens.
That’s where plant-based meals come into play.
Choosing plant-forward recipes helps reduce your carbon footprint, conserve water, and cut down on food waste. Even one or two plant-based meals a week makes a difference—and at Gusto TV, we believe those meals should taste as good as they make you feel.
Here are six eco-friendly recipes from our shows that prove you don’t have to sacrifice flavour to eat green:
Ginger “Beef”: Crispy, sticky, and packed with sweet-spicy flavour, this plant-based spin on the takeout favourite uses seitan for a satisfying meatless twist.
Tofu Tikka Masala: Bold, comforting, and packed with plant-based protein, this twist on the Indian classic is perfect for cozy nights in.
Vegan King Oyster Tacos: Meaty mushrooms meet zesty toppings in this deliciously inventive taco recipe that’s big on flavour and light on environmental impact.
Cauliflower Steaks: Roasted until golden and topped with vibrant sauces and herbs, these steaks are a hearty, elegant main for any plant-forward table.
White Lasagna: Creamy, comforting, and completely dairy-free, this lasagna is layered with seasonal vegetables and a rich béchamel-style sauce.
Veggie Udon Noodles: Chewy noodles, crisp seasonal vegetables, and a savoury broth come together in this satisfying, slurp-worthy dish.
Remember, eating sustainably doesn’t have to mean a total lifestyle overhaul. Start small:
– Choose local, seasonal produce
– Reduce meat and dairy where you can
– Cook from scratch to avoid excess packaging
– Use up leftovers creatively
– Compost food scraps
These habits don’t just help the planet—they can save you money and make you a more mindful cook.
So, this Earth Day, take a moment to savour a plant-powered meal. Whether you’re going green for the day or starting a new habit, every meal is a chance to celebrate our planet and protect it for the future.
The Urban Botanist on Green Spaces, Creativity & Connecting with Nature
Known for her passion for bringing greenery into urban spaces and helping people reconnect with nature, Emma Terrell has built a thriving business—The Urban Botanist—rooted in creativity, sustainability, and wellness. She shines on Gusto TV’s Inside & Out, where she shares her plant expertise and creative energy. We caught up with Emma to chat about her journey, plant tips, and why following your passion matters.
What inspired you to start The Urban Botanist?
Emma Terrell: I felt disconnected from nature while juggling university and fulltime and part time jobs, so I started building terrariums for a fun escape to reconnect. It was therapeutic—and I knew others would feel the same. I wanted to share this feeling with more friends, family, and beyond that, my community. Surely, I wasn’t the only one who needed this! That’s how The Urban Botanist began.
Was there a moment you knew nature would be your life’s work?
ET: I always knew deep down. As a kid growing up, I wasn’t watching cartoons, I was watching National Geographic. Even in my early years of studying political science in university, I’d tell people, “I want to work in nature.” I didn’t know how, but I followed the feeling.
Do you have a plant with sentimental value?
ET: My first Monstera. It started as a single stem gifted by a stranger at a garden center, and it sparked my plant-curiosity. Now it’s massive and a reminder of how this journey began.
Top tip for bringing greenery into small spaces?
ET: Start simple. Herbs, succulents, or low-maintenance plants like snake plants or pothos are great. And before buying, use your phone to identify the plant and understand its needs—your iPhone’s camera app or Google Lens can help!
Best plant for beginners who forget to water?
ET: Cacti, succulents, snake plants—anything low-maintenance that doesn’t need much attention.
Most common plant mistake?
ET: Overwatering. People kill their plants with love! Think about where your plant naturally grows and try to recreate that environment at home.
What trends are you loving in the plant world?
ET: People are getting more into rewilding and planting native species. I’m also seeing a rise in natural wellness—people reading ingredient labels and choosing organic, toxin-free living.
Benefits of growing your own herbs?
ET: It’s empowering and eco-friendly. You get fresher, more nutritious food, save money, and avoid pesticides and plastic waste.
Any standout moments from filming Inside & Out?
ET: Seeing the set filled with all my favorite things—from bird feeders to crystals—was surreal. It felt like an extension of my passions brought to life.
Favorite part of working with Gusto Studios?
ET: The team! As someone who usually creates content solo, working with such a supportive, excited crew was a dream.
Most rewarding part of your work?
ET: Inspiring the next generation of eco-activists and nature lovers. Recently, a young girl told me she was bullied for loving plants and bugs—and now she feels proud of it after seeing me speak as The Urban Botanist. That moment reminded me why this work matters.
Any exciting projects coming up?
ET: I’m working on a new Gusto show about creative hobbies that I’m excited about! I also recently launched my Rewilding – Sustainable Landscape Design series on YouTube: a series dedicated to transforming outdoor spaces into thriving ecosystems that work with nature rather than against it.
Emma is living proof that when you follow your passion—no matter how unconventional—it can bloom into something beautiful.
Spring is the season of renewal—longer days, fresh blooms, and a great time to revive not just your space, but also your mindset. A carefully set table can create a sense of order and beauty, helping you feel put together and ready to embrace the season’s energy.
Setting the Scene
Think of the table as a blank canvas. What story should it tell? Spring is all about fresh starts, which means soft pastels, greens, and floral accents. Layering textures—linen table runners, vintage ceramic plates, and delicate glassware that catches the light just right—adds depth. Every detail matters and leaning into the season’s vibrancy makes the table feel even more inviting.
The Centerpiece
A striking centerpiece is the heart of any table. You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers like blooming purple lilacs or pink peonies. But if flowers aren’t your thing, potted herbs or a bowl of lemons and limes can work just as beautifully. The key is to keep the centerpiece low enough so guests can chat without peering around it.
Plating with Purpose
A mix of modern and vintage elements makes a tablescape feel effortlessly stylish. A tip? Use those mismatched family heirlooms, like grandma’s china or handmade pottery, because they tell a story. Add a personal touch with handwritten place cards or napkin rings. It’s the little details that make guests feel welcomed.
Tablescaping isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating an atmosphere that makes people linger a little longer. It’s about the way the candlelight flickers against the wine glasses, the warmth of shared laughter, and the flavors that come alive when the mood is just right. It feeds the soul in a way that takeout containers on the couch simply can’t.
So, this Spring, don’t just set the table—set the stage for unforgettable moments.

A Conversation with Vanessa Gianfrancesco: Passion, Authenticity, and Feeding the Soul
Vanessa Gianfrancesco has captured hearts with her vibrant personality, warm storytelling, and undeniable culinary talent. As a beloved Gusto host, she invites audiences into her kitchen, sharing dishes that celebrate her Italian heritage, family, and pure love for cooking. We caught up with Vanessa to talk about her journey and what’s next for her delicious adventures.
Q: What first sparked your passion for food and inspired you to bring it to television?
Vanessa: My passion for food began as a child, cooking with my Nona. I loved making pasta with her and feeding our large family—seeing the joy on their faces while eating was incredibly fulfilling. I realized television gave me the perfect platform to share that passion with others. There’s nothing more gratifying than feeding the people you love.
Q: Can you share a behind-the-scenes moment from filming at Gusto Studios?
Vanessa: There are two! The first is my giggles. If I start laughing, then the entire cast is laughing, turned over, and in tears. Nobody can film because we need to take a minute break! The second moment that stands out is when I was pregnant, and nobody knew yet. I remember going on set, smelling the food, and suddenly feeling unwell. Food, something I love so much, was making me feel nauseous—it was so unlike me! That was an interesting time.
Q: What’s one misconception about being a food TV host that you wish more people understood?
Vanessa: That it’s all glamorous! There’s a lot of hard work, long hours, and endless preparation behind every episode. And I’m talking from the dishwasher all the way to the chef. There’s a lot of people behind the one host on the show. But at the end of the day, the joy of sharing food makes it all worth it.
Q: In Feed My Soul…V!, your sister Stefania joined you. How did it feel working together?
Vanessa: Cooking together felt like home and sharing that bond with viewers made it even more special. When she came on and actually saw what goes into making a show, she looked at me and said, “I don’t think anybody knows what you do.” Sharing the stage with her, reminiscing, and bringing back memories was so special.
Q: Is there a particular episode in Feed My Soul…V! that holds special meaning for you?
Vanessa: I think the “Walk Down Memory Lane” episode really stood out. It featured pictures of moments in my life—family, loved ones, home-cooked meals. That episode was about connecting on a deeper level and sharing more than just a recipe—viewers want to know who I’m with, what I’m doing, and the memories behind the meals.
Q: What’s one dish from Feed My Soul…V! that everyone should make at home?
Vanessa: Oh, Stefy’s Banana Bread! That’s her recipe—I don’t normally make it at home, but she does, and I gobble it up! I’m more of a cook than a baker, so I let her take the lead and making it together on set was such a fun experience.
Q: If you could cook alongside any chef, past or present, who would it be and why?
Vanessa: Ina Garten. She is the epitome of hosting. I remember watching Ina as a kid. When I think about hosting, decorating, or cooking, she’s a huge inspiration. She’s just a class act.
Q: Are there any exciting projects, collaborations, or recipes you’re working on that fans can look forward to?
Vanessa: Yes! After about a year and a half in the making, I launched a company called District 22 in Montreal, Canada. We go into schools and completely transform their food programs, turning cafeterias into upscale dining spaces with amazing, colorful, nutritious food. We’re serving over 2,500 meals a day now, and students are loving it! It’s one of the most fulfilling projects I’ve ever worked on—different from TV, but just as meaningful.
Vanessa’s passion for food goes beyond the kitchen. Whether she’s sharing a family recipe on screen, creating new memories with loved ones, or reimagining school cafeterias with District 22, her mission remains the same: to nourish, inspire, and bring people together through food.
